Sulawesi Amber is a very dark colour and from what I understand has been produced as a bi-product of coal mining and where the coal and amber were subjected to volcanic heat which would act like an oven and 'cook' the amber. In addition to that, the dark colour could also be the result of having organic matter, mud, soil introduced into the 'mix' during this whole process. If you hold a piece in the light you can really see the deep orange and brown tones.
